Mamas Gun are a five-piece UK soul band whose music draws from the Black soul tradition while folding in jazz, funk, R&B and gospel. The group channels touchstones including Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers and Sly Stone, built around warm grooves, rich keys, amazing collecting musicianship and Platts’ distinctive voice.
Across six albums, Mamas Gun have steadily refined their sound. With the 2018 release of album Golden Days marked a shift toward deeper, classic soul. The band began self-producing and recording live to analogue tape, an approach that continued through 2022’s Cure the Jones record.
Their sixth album, DIG! carries that evolution forward. Recorded live to 16-track tape at ATA Studios in Leeds and featuring Brian Jackson on its title track, the record centers the chemistry of five musicians playing together in a room—soul music grounded in tradition, shaped by years of collective playing.
