Afroman began making music in eighth grade, recording homemade songs and selling tapes to classmates before developing his musicianship on drums and guitar in church. He released his debut album, My Fro-losophy, in 1998, later relocating to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he connected with producer Tim Ramenofsky and musicians who helped shape his early recordings.

His breakthrough came with “Because I Got High,” released in 2000 and initially circulated through concerts and Napster. The track became a major hit in 2001, appeared in several films, and earned a 2002 Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. Its success led to appearances alongside Cypress Hill, Deftones and Method Man, followed by a six-album deal with Universal Records and the release of The Good Times.

Since 2004, Afroman has largely released music independently, using the internet to maintain a direct connection with his audience.
